Statement: California files federal lawsuit on Clean Car Standards

State’s governor pushes for background information on climate policy rollback

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration filed a federal lawsuit today calling for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reveal the underlying data and analysis behind their proposed rollback of the federal Clean Car Standards.
The “health of millions of kids, families and communities” is at risk, and the Trump administration has been stonewalling California’s requests for the “basic data, analysis, and methodology” behind this “arbitrary” and “radical” rollback, the governor’s office explained in announcing the suit.
Andrea McGimsey, the senior director of Environment America’s Global Warming Solutions Campaign, issued the following statement:
“For decades, California has been a leader when it comes to making our cars more efficient and environmentally friendly. This essential effort has resulted in cleaner air across the nation.
The Trump administration’s federal Clean Car Standards rollback poses a serious risk to the health and well-being of all Americans, but particularly those who live in cities like Los Angeles with millions of cars on the road. And, with the impacts of global warming becoming more and more severe across the nation — in states as far-flung as California, Nebraska and North Carolina — now is the time when we should be moving faster than ever to clean up our cars and trucks. Instead, the federal government is slamming into reverse.
With this lawsuit, Governor Newsom and his team are helping all Americans by pushing to uncover the special interests who are behind this dangerous policy shift. We urge the EPA and NHTSA to abandon this rollback of our nation’s best climate policy and get back to their mission to protect public health and the environment.”
