Courts halt two major oil and gas pipelines

WASHINGTON — A federal judge vacated an Army Corps of Engineers approval for the Dakota Pipeline on Monday. The court ordered the pipeline to be emptied within 30 days for an estimated 13 months while the Corps conducts an environmental review. This ruling came a day after Duke Energy and Dominion Power announced they are abandoning the Atlantic Coast Pipeline due to rising legal challenges and uncertainties.
Andrea McGimsey, senior director for Environment America’s Global Warming Solutions campaign, issued the following statement:
“We are grateful for these decisions, which support what so many of us already know: Projects that maintain our dependence on fossil fuels and, as a result, create serious risks to public health, nature, our national heritage and a stable climate, must be halted. Terminating these projects is essential in our fight to continue the type of change necessary to solve the pressing threat global warming poses to all life on this planet.

It’s time to keep fossil fuels in the ground, stop building wasteful and dangerous infrastructure for out-dated energy sources, and move quickly into a future powered by clean, renewable energy.”
