House Bill Lifts Lands Protections from Alaska to Arizona

At 5 pm today, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a package of bills that represent another direct attack on the Best of America: from Alaska’s ancient forests to the shores of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras, not to mention all public lands within 100 miles of the nation’s border. Environment America joins with conservation groups, sportsmen, Native American tribal organizations, businesses and Hispanic and immigration reform advocates to oppose H.R. 2578 the so-called “Conservation and Economic Growth Act.”

NC House lawmakers approve pro-fracking measure

Raleigh, NC—Following a contentious debate, house lawmakers approved a sweeping measure that paves the way for a controversial method of gas drilling called “fracking” as soon as 2014.  Because the measure did not garner enough votes to override a veto, attention turns now to Governor Bev Perdue.

Offshore Wind a Boon for North Carolina's Environment and Economy

A new report released today found that offshore wind turbines could create up to three times as many jobs for the state as offshore oil and gas drilling, according to a new report released today by Environment North Carolina Research and Policy Center.  The report, “Wind Mills, Not Oil Spill, The Environmental and Economic Benefits of Offshore Wind Versus Offshore Drilling in North Carolina” also details the environmental benefits of offshore wind power and documents the risks of drilling off North Carolina’s prized coast.
