Today, Department of Interior Secretary, Sally Jewel, and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director, Abby Hopper, announced the lease sale notice for over 79,000 acres off of the coast of New York. Citing strong industry interest in the opportunity to develop off Long Island, advocates lauded the announcement as another important step toward realizing offshore wind.

The Wind Energy Area will be offered in a commercial lease sale on December 15.

Heather Leibowitz, Director of Environment New York, had this to say about the announcement:

“The Empire State is poised to lead the nation on offshore wind. Following through on this lease sale puts us one step closer. The lease area, which is over 79,000 acres, can play an important role in shifting New York to pollution-free energy. We look forward to continuing to working with local, state and federal officials to transition to an energy system powered entirely by renewable energy.”
