While this is a significant milestone, swift action would ensure immediate and lasting protection for this irreplaceable treasure.
Before adjourning at the end of 2024 the Senate approved Sen. Ron Wyden’s bill to protect more 1 million acres in the Owyhee Canyonlands, often referred to as “Oregon’s Grand Canyon.” This legislative milestone represents a significant advancement in the ongoing efforts to preserve this unique and ecologically rich landscape.
The Owyhee Canyonlands, with its deep red-rock canyons, wild rivers and diverse wildlife, is a treasure trove of natural wonders. Permanent protection of this area is crucial to safeguard its unique geology, rich ancient history and healthy wildlife habitats from threats such as development, mining and other destructive activities.
Gov. Tina Kotek’s support, as expressed in her letter advocating for the area’s protection, underscores the broad consensus among state leadership and the public on the importance of preserving the Owyhee. This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty and solitude of the Owyhee Canyonlands.
While the Senate’s approval marks a significant step forward, the journey toward permanent protection is not yet complete. There is still time to use this momentum as a springboard for the Owyhee Canyonlands to be designated as a national monument, while simultaneously announcing the intent to introduce legislation in 2025 that would finish the job.
