Environment Massachusetts announces independent expenditure campaign to help re-elect environmental champion Sen. Ed Markey

Boston – To help re-elect U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, the citizen group Environment Massachusetts today announced it intends to put together a $5 million campaign dedicated to supporting him.

Environment Massachusetts is reaching out to groups and individuals throughout Massachusetts to encourage them to join an independent campaign to promote the senator’s remarkable record to all the voters of the Commonwealth.

Environment America Action Fund has pledged $1 million towards this effort.

“We are lucky to have one of the nation’s strongest climate champions, Ed Markey, representing Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate. Voters need to know what Ed Markey has done throughout decades of public service to advance renewable energy, clean water, clean air, and the protection of our public lands. We intend to tell his story,” said Ben Hellerstein, state director for Environment Massachusetts.

Last week, Environment Massachusetts and Environment America endorsed Sen. Markey. In announcing their support, Environment America’s Chairman Doug Phelps said, “Senator Markey has made Environment America’s core commitments to clean air, clean water, and open spaces a top priority for more years, more consistently, than anyone else in public office.”

“Ed Markey is the Senate’s foremost environmental champion,” Phelps said. “I first met Senator Markey in 1980, when I was the new Executive Director of MASSPIRG and running a national campaign to win a clean energy plank in both the Republican and the Democratic national party platforms. At the Democratic National Convention in New York, Ed Markey, a congressman at the time, was the first to vocally step up and champion those efforts against vigorous opposition from the party establishment. Against all odds, we won that fight, in no small part due to Ed’s courage and leadership. The scope of Senator Markey’s accomplishments since that early battle is singularly impressive. He is the leader we need to tackle the crisis our planet and children will face if we don’t make the dramatic transition to clean, renewable energy for which Ed has fought, for decades. That is why we proudly endorse him for re-election.”
