Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, Philadelphia Office of Sustainability, PennEnvironment and Moms Clean Air Force will host Clean Power Plan Citizens’ Hearing
(PHILADELPHIA) January 9, 2017 – Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, Chair of the Committee on the Environment in partnership with the Philadelphia Office of Sustainability, PennEnvironment and Moms Clean Air Force will host a Citizens’ Hearing on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 5:00pm at City Hall, Council Chambers to address the Trump Administration’s plan to repeal the Clean Power Plan.
Guest speakers include:
- State Representative Donna Bullock
- State Representative Steve McCarter
- State Representative Gene DiGirolamo
- State Representative Greg Vitali
- Geoff Mock on behalf of Senator Casey
A Trump administration analysis found that the Clean Power Plan could prevent as many as 4,500 premature deaths each year by 2030 – an estimate higher than previous EPA projections. Original estimates found the Clean Power Plan could:
· Prevent 90,000 asthma attacks and 300,000 missed work and school days by 2030.
· Cut other power plant pollution that triggers asthma attacks and worsens respiratory illnesses, providing total health and climate benefits of up to $54 billion.
More than 200,000 Pennsylvanians supported the Clean Power Plan’s historic effort to cut climate pollution and hundreds turned out to public hearings in the state when it was first introduced. But as EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt moves to repeal this landmark plan, there have been no public hearings in Pennsylvania.
We know most Pennsylvanians want our energy future to look a lot cleaner–and we need to let Administrator Scott Pruitt know it too. So we are hosting a citizens’ hearing of Pennsylvania residents and elected officials this Thursday to make sure that Pennsylvanians’ voices are being heard on this repeal.
“Global warming and climate change affects everyone and everything on the planet,” said Councilwoman Reynolds Brown. “It is important to reaffirm the census of the environmental community that the mission to protect and preserve the environment is one of vital importance.”
“With the hurricanes, fires, floods, and extreme temperatures we’ve seen this year, we need to take the threat of climate change seriously,” said Flora Cardoni, Lead Climate Defender Organizer, Penn Environment. “Instead, the Trump administration is repealing the Clean Power Plan— the single largest effort the US has taken to cut climate pollution. This move will increase harmful air pollution and threaten our health, putting Pennsylvanians’ lives and livelihoods at risk.”
