Protesters disrupt Marcellus Shale commission meeting

During the Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission’s meeting protesters repeatedly disrupted it by rallying loudly outside and interrupting presentations. Their main concerns were the lack of citizens groups on the panel and the lack of input from the public. Many protesters had to be escorted out of the building.

Two months ago, two men were severly burned in a natural gas fire in Washington County. They are now claiming a lawsuit saying that the lax oversight of Marcellus Shale gas drillers in Pennsylvania contributed to their injuries.

Growing Greener fund is worth saving

Growing Greener, an initiative started in 1999 that has funded river restoration, education, and other environmental projects around Pennsylvania, is running out of money within the next few months. Governor Corbett has proposed a budget that lets annual grants to Growing Greener decline and the fees that funded it have been directed to pay off debt. With natural-gas drilling becoming a huge issue in Pennsylvania, Growing Greener needs to be re-funded.

Every Democrat, a majority of Republican senators and numerous House Republicans are expects to support a tax or fee involving the natural gas industry. Senate President Joe Scarnati and Representative Kate Harper are preparing to introduce another bill in addition to six others that have been considered in the Legislature.

Treatment plant plan is shelved

Cate Street Capital has decided not to build a plant at the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority to treat wastewater from Marcellus shale gas drilling. The Hanover township community expressed their concerns on the issue to the company and the company decided that the citizen opposition was more important than building the plant.

DEP needs to do its part in the gas drilling boom

After the Department of Environmental Protection issued a permit that allows for an exploratory gas well in northeastern Pennsylvania only half a mile from the Delaware River and 300 feet from a pristine stream, it was discovered that regulators only spend half an hour when reading gas well permit applications. The DEP declined to comment on their permit process.
