Rockhill Quarry — Letter to Gov. Wolf

Dear Governor Wolf,

On behalf of PennEnvironment’s citizen members and activists residing in Bucks County, I am writing to ask that you permanently close operations at the Rockhill Quarry, located in East Rockhill Township.

Independent testing has confirmed the presence of asbestos, a known carcinogen, in the geological formations found in the Rockhill Quarry.  Given this, restarting mining at this site will pose a grave risk to neighbors, the surrounding communities, and most alarmingly, the community’s children. All told, 24 local schools, some offering early childhood care, are located within 5 miles of Rockhill Quarry. Given what we know about the dangers of asbestos, restarting mining operations at the quarry should not be an option.

With the recent operator announcing their lease has been terminated by the quarry’s owner, it’s now time to take action and ensure that the quarry is closed permanently.

To protect our communities in and around Rockhill, we are joining local elected officials and township officials to call on you and your staff at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to permanently halt any mining from restarting at the Rockhill Quarry.

I look forward to hearing back from you on this important topic.

Sincerely,

David Masur
