RE: Evaluation of Existing Regulations, Docket EPA–HQ–OA–2017–0190, Specifically Vehicle and Engine Standards

Dear Administrator Pruitt:

I write today on behalf of Environment America’s members and supporters across the country who want clean air and a healthy climate.  We strongly oppose the administration’s attempts to roll back public health and environmental safeguards under the Clean Air Act, specifically the standards that reduce pollution from vehicles. Transportation is now the largest source of dangerous carbon pollution in the country, so these standards are more important than ever. As we continue to face the impacts of global warming, it more important than ever to move towards cleaner cars and trucks, not rollback existing successful programs.   We must continue  to make progress and cutting pollution while curtailing our oil consumption. 

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for cleaner vehicles be maintained, if not strengthened to reduce dangerous air pollution, protect our climate, reduce our dependence on oil and save American drivers money at the pump. These regulations include, but are not limited to the following:

• Light-Duty Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards for Model Years 2017-2025 (40 CFR Parts 85, 86, and 600)

• Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles—Phase 2 (40 CFR Parts 9, 22, 85, 86, 600, 1033, 1036, 1037, 1039, 1042, 1043, 1065, 1066, and 1068)

• Control of Air Pollution from Motor Vehicles: Tier 3 Motor Vehicle Emission and Fuel Standards (40 CFR Parts 79, 80, 85, et al.)

During the rulemaking processes for the above-mentioned standards, Environment America submitted over 40,000 grassroots comments in support of strong vehicle standards. In addition , more than a hundred mayors, city councilors, and fleet managers from across the country submitted a  letter supported the heavy-duty vehicle standards. More than 1000 healthcare professionals across the country also highlighted support for strengthening the standards in a letter for President Trump in December.  

EPA’s vehicle standards are of the utmost importance for reducing pollution, protecting our health and our environment. We urge the EPA to maintain the existing vehicle standards and work to strengthen them.
