PFAS (forever chemicals) are out of fire fighter gear in RI, Governor McKee signs bill
Great news for firefighters in Rhode Island! Just a week ago Governor McKee signed into law a significant bill that will ban the manufacture, sale, and distribution of firefighting personal protective equipment containing intentionally added PFAS chemicals in the state.
New research has found that more than 330 species of wildlife, spanning every continent except Antarctica, have toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” in their systems.
In humans, exposure to these chemicals has been found to contribute to a wide array of health problems, from thyroid disease and high cholesterol to infertility, low birth weight and an increased risk of cancer. In animals, studies have found similar links between PFAS and serious health threats.
PFAS chemicals are human-made, but it’s clear their widespread use has resulted in an environmental crisis reaching far beyond the realm of humans.
This legislation is a crucial step in protecting the health of firefighters who are regularly exposed to these “forever chemicals” through their turnout gear. While the bill was signed recently, the ban on PFAS in firefighter gear will go into effect on January 1, 2027. This allows for a transition period for departments to acquire and implement PFAS-free alternatives.
It’s important to note that Rhode Island had already taken steps to address PFAS exposure in firefighting. As of January 1, 2025, a ban on Class B firefighting foam containing intentionally added PFAS went into effect. This new law expands those protections to the essential gear worn by firefighters.
This move aligns Rhode Island with a growing number of states recognizing the health risks associated with PFAS and taking action to eliminate them from various consumer products, including those used by first responders. The legislation reflects a strong effort to safeguard the well-being of those who bravely serve their communities.
