New estimates suggest that the number of manatees that have died in just the past 12 years equals their entire current population.

It’s clear how close we are to losing these iconic sea cows forever. And it’s clear what they need if they’re going to recover: better protections for their food and habitat. The Endangered Species Act, with a success rate of 99%, has helped save species from humpback whales to bald eagles. Now, we need the Act to work its magic for manatees, and we need to keep pushing for other wildlife-saving measures such as the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act and federal clean water protections.
