Did you know that the Spruce Coal Plant just outside of San Antonio is one of the leading emitters of climate-changing pollution in Texas? On top of that, the coal-fired power plant emits more than a million pounds of sulfur dioxide pollution each year, which can harm the respiratory system and exacerbate asthma.

Despite the plant’s effect on our air and climate, CPS Energy — the utility which owns the plant — has no plans to shut it down. A coalition of groups in San Antonio is collecting petitions to amend the city charter to force CPS to shut down the plant by 2030. If 20,000 petition signatures are collected, the proposed changes to the charter would go before voters in May 2021. The changes to the charter would require that CPS Energy shut down the Spruce Coal Plant by 2030.

Climate change is here, and it’s now. In Texas, we’re already seeing record-breaking storms, droughts, and heatwaves. We need to get off fossil fuels as quickly as possible to ensure our children and children’s children inherit a livable climate.

Together, we can build a future powered on 100% renewable energy. Join us and sign the petition today. Download, sign, and mail in this petition to ensure a green energy future for San Antonio here.
