Statement: Biden acts on Gulf offshore wind

Metzger issued the following statement in response to the President's announcement: "It's exciting to see offshore wind in the Gulf getting closer to reality. With strong winds in the evenings when we need energy the most, offshore wind in the Gulf of Mexico would greatly complement Texas’ onshore renewable energy resources, help bolster our shaky electric grid, and help our environment. With shallow, warm water, smaller waves, and existing offshore infrastructure and expertise, we're well suited to develop this abundant, clean resource. I applaud the President and the Interior Department for moving forward with developing this incredible resource."

Statement: Ft. Bend county’s W.A. Parish coal plant catches fire

For decades, NRG Energy’s W.A. Parish coal-fired power plant in Fort Bend county has also threatened public health and the natural environment. EPA data identified the plant as the third most heavily polluting plant in the state, emitting almost 10.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 30,000 metric tons of methane and 50,000 metric tons of nitrous oxide. A 2018 study by Dr. Daniel Cohan’s research group in Rice University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering estimated that Parish is responsible for 177 premature deaths annually.

Statement: National Fish and Wildlife Foundation opens applications for ‘America the Beautiful Challenge’ grants

“From Big Bend to Caddo Lake, our natural lands are a big part of what makes Texas a beautiful and desirable place to live. We need more nature in our lives -- more places to explore, listen to the birds sing, swim in the water and restore peace and balance in our lives. We urge our state and local leaders to take full advantage of the America the Beautiful Challenge to conserve and restore Texas’ lands, waters and wildlife. Thank you to President Biden, Secretary Haaland and all the members of Congress who voted for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which funds this crucial program.”
