AUSTIN – Environment Texas congratulated former Vice President Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) today on receiving this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for their tireless efforts to inform the public about the dangers of global warming and urge action to slow its progress.

“After decades of work by the world’s scientists and Vice President Al Gore to educate the public about the threats posed by global warming, today’s Nobel Peace Price is their badge of success,” said JJ Karabias, Federal Associate with Environment Texas.  “Now it’s time to turn knowledge into action by passing a strong federal law to reduce global warming pollution quickly enough to protect future generations from the worst effects of global warming,” he continued.

Climate scientists warn that there is a very short window of time to begin serious emission reductions and still have a decent chance of avoiding dangerous impacts.  According to the most recent science, the United States must halt increases in global warming emissions now, cut emissions by at least 15 to 20 percent by 2020, and slash emissions by at least 80 percent by 2050.  The energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies needed to begin to achieve these reductions are “already at our fingertips,” noted Karabias.
