50% of forestland cleared for agriculture is sitting idle

Agriculture is the primary cause of deforestation but according to new research, nearly half the land isn't even being used for agricultural puporses after the trees are chopped down.

To make room for cattle to graze, large swaths of the Amazon Rainforest is burnt down.

According to a new study, covered in Mongabay, “half of tropical forestland cleared for agriculture isn’t put to use.”

The article says that the “world has lost one-third of its forest since the last ice age” so why, when we need to be preserving our forests, are we cutting them down so recklessly?
