Caribou habitat needs more protections in the Western Arctic

While there are hundreds of species in the Western Arctic Reserve, caribou merit special consideration.

Environment America joined coalition partners on Monday to submit a letter and more than 275,000 grassroots comments calling on the Bureau of Land Management to protect more caribou habitat in the Western Arctic Reserve.

As our letter describes, “The Western Arctic Reserve supports three important caribou herds: the Teshekpuk Caribou Herd, the Western Arctic Caribou Herd, and the Central Arctic Herd. All three herds are under threat from oil and gas development and increasing impacts from climate change.”
