Funding for wildlife refuges and the volunteers that make them go

America’s national wildlife refuges provide sanctuary for a dizzying array of wildlife

The House of Representatives passed the Keep America’s Refuges Operational Act of 2022 by Reps. Jeffries (NY) and Wittman (VA) on September 19. The bipartisan measure provides funding through 2027 for volunteer services  and education programs in our National Wildlife Refuge System.

America’s 567 national wildlife refuges provide sanctuary for America’s dizzying array of wildlife. There’s a refuge in every state, and collectively they encompass “almost every type of habitat imaginable.”

This bill is important because volunteers play a huge role in our refuge system. According to Ducks Unlimited, volunteers provide more than 20 percent of refuge work each year.

We’re pleased to see this bipartisan measure moving.
