Environment America Public Lands Campaign Director Ellen Montgomery meets President Biden as he unveils the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument.

Colorado is now home to the first national monument designated under the Biden administration.

Established in October 2022, the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument will preserve 53,804 acres in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains around the former army base known as Camp Hale. The designation will protect this area from new mining and oil drilling leases, which, given the Continental Divide’s role in providing water to the western U.S., will provide crucial protection to the water millions of Americans rely on.

Environment America Public Lands Campaign Director Ellen Montgomery attended the president’s announcement in Colorado, and said, “We’re thrilled to celebrate President Biden’s first national monument and look forward to celebrating more.”

Previously home to the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, the camp helped train soldiers for combat in World War II. Now, it is valued by outdoor recreationists for its hiking trails and snow sports, as well as wildlife such as elk, lynx and bears for its pristine habitat.
