Wildlife Over Waste

Sysco should join other big companies and reduce its use of plastics

Environment America urges Sysco’s shareholders to vote yes to reduce plastics and protect the environment.

Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world.”

We can and must do better, and doing better will require action at many levels, from many different actors.

On Friday, November 18, shareholders of Sysco, a big food company, will have the chance to tell the company to reduce its “absolute plastic packaging use.” (Search for Item 6 in the linked proposal).

A vote followed by genuine change at Sysco would be huge. Headquartered in Houston, Sysco is a major player in the food industry, providing food and kitchen items to senior homes, hospitals, universities, restaurants and more.

Plus, a win would build on a recent victory at General Mills. In September, its shareholders instructed the company – the maker of Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Nature Valley and more – to reduce its use of plastics.

Let’s hope Sysco follows suit. After all, nothing we use for a few minutes should pollute the environment for hundreds of years.
