To make a truly sustainable transportation system that supports healthy communities and a healthy planet, we need infrastructure that supports walking and biking. One great way to do this is by building dedicated walking and biking trails. Utah’s governor and Department of Transportation recently announced their intent to build a network of trails in the state to facilitate pedestrian and bike travel. This would involve Utah’s Department of Transportation working with localities to build and maintain trails. Walkways and bikeways can be a great way to make it easier, safer and more pleasant to walk and bike, and to encourage people to leave the car at home and to experience the great outdoors.

This statement offers a vision of new ways for Utah residents to connect with jobs, services and recreation. Active transportation measures like this can be even more effective when local government works to optimize land use practices that create walkable cities, towns, and villages. This announcement marks a step forward for Utah, and a step forward for planet and people-centered transportation.
