Beyond plastic

Plastic waste pollutes our environment.

At its annual meeting today, a majority of General Mills’ shareholders voted for a resolution telling the company to reduce its use of plastic packaging. General Mills is the parent company of Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Nature Valley and more.

Shareholder Resolution 6 called for a report on “how the company can increase the scale, pace, and rigor of its sustainable packaging efforts by reducing its absolute plastic packaging use.” The company’s board had voted unanimously to oppose the measure.

Why does this matter?

Plastic waste is inundating America’s rivers and streams, and clogging up the world’s oceans. We need all hands on deck to address this plastic scourge. By committing to reduce its use of plastics, General Mills can be part of the solution.

Choosing wildlife

“A Betty Crocker cake is wonderful and all, but it’s hard to stomach all the plastics that come with these everyday products. We need companies to choose America’s birds, turtles and whales over unneeded waste.”

What’s next?

Now that its shareholders agree that General Mills should do more, we look forward to the company making solid commitments to move beyond plastics. Stay tuned.
