Environment Virginia, Environment America endorse Virginia State Sen. Jennifer McClellan in U.S. House special election
RICHMOND, Va. – Environment Virginia and its national office Environment America announced Thursday that they are endorsing Virginia State Sen. Jennifer McClellan in the special election to fill the Congressional seat vacated by the late U.S. Rep. Donald McEachin.
“In her 17 years as a state legislator, Jennifer McClellan has built a record as an environmental champ, a pleasure to work with and someone humble enough to listen to the people she represents,” said Elly Boehmer Wilson, Environment Virginia’s state director. “Everyone who works in the environmental space in Virginia loves her. We will miss her strong presence on the Virginia Senate Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources committee, but know she will do great things for Virginians as the next Congresswoman from Virginia.”
To date, Sen. McClellan’s most impactful environmental achievement has been shepherding the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which created a plan for transitioning Virginia’s power sources from fossil fuels to 100% clean energy, through the state senate. Among other highlights, McClellan also championed the Solar Freedom Act, was the chief co-sponsor on clean cars legislation and co-sponsored legislation to increase electric vehicle charging access.
“Even though Sen. McClellan has been in the minority party during much of her tenure in the Virginia Senate, she has an enviable track record of successful legislation — and we expect that she will continue her willingness to work across the aisle on behalf of her constituents in Washington,” said Lisa Frank, the executive director of Environment America’s Washington Legislative Office. “We miss Rep. McEachin, but we have faith that Jennifer McClellan will carry on his 4th Congressional District tradition of environmental protection.”
