As fires rage in the Amazon rainforest, Environment America members are calling for a corporate commitment to zero deforestation.

In August, more than 10,000 members and supporters from across our national network called on U.S.-based agricultural giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) to commit to zero deforestation in all of its supply chains by 2020. The fires this summer have caused unprecedented destruction in the Amazon, but even under ordinary circumstances, deforestation claims a chunk of tropical forest the size of 40 football fields every single minute.

“The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth: a treasure trove of natural wonders that, once destroyed, can never be replaced,” said Steve Blackledge, senior director of our national network’s Conservation program. “At a time when climate-fueled disasters are becoming more common than ever, we simply can’t afford to keep cutting down these forests.”

ADM joins Cargill on the list of companies we’re urging to commit to zero deforestation.
