Richmond, VA — Today, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded Dominion Virginia Power a $47 million grant to support an offshore wind demonstration project off the coast of Virginia. The recipient of one of three grants awarded today, Dominion plans to install two 6 MW turbines off of Virginia Beach. Environment Virginia’s Campaign Director, Sarah Bucci, released the following statement in response:

“This is a great step forward for the development of an offshore wind industry in Virginia. This demonstration project will help ensure that Virginia can realize the tremendous potential off our coast to produce clean, pollution-free offshore wind energy.

“Responsibly harnessing the power of the wind blowing off our coasts is critical for cutting carbon pollution, and repowering Virginia with clean, renewable energy. We are thrilled with this progress and look forward to continued action from the Obama administration so Virginians, and all Americans, can start reaping the benefits of pollution-free offshore wind power.”
