It took a green sea turtle hatchling rescued from an Australian beach six full days to purge its digestive system of all the plastic it had mistaken for food.

Though the turtle was ultimately alright, many animals can starve when they ingest too much plastic that they can’t digest — a tragic fate that is only becoming more common as more plastic waste pours into the ocean.

It’ll take all of us to make concrete progress toward a plastic-free future. We’re well on our way, having made major progress at the state and local levels to reduce plastic pollution in the past few years — but we need to do more to protect our wildlife. Will you donate today to put our planet over plastic?
