The Climate Commitment Act, and the billions of dollars it generates for critical climate programs throughout Washington State, was defended by Washington voters yesterday. Washingtonians upheld the Climate Commitment Act (CCA) by voting no on Initiative 2117, a ballot measure that would have immediately repealed the cap-and-invest program and prohibited any similar carbon trading programs in the future.
Initiative 2117 was primarily bankrolled by one hedge fund executive. In comparison, the no on I-2117 coalition, made up of 575 organizations and Tribal Nations, including Environment Washington and WashPIRG, was a diverse alliance that came together to defend the health and climate benefits provided by the CCA.
With the Climate Commitment Act defended, Washington will continue to benefit from the investments in clean transportation infrastructure, building electrification, and clean energy development that the program provides. Additionally, the CCA will ensure that the Evergreen State achieves its greenhouse gas emission reduction goal of 95% by 2050.
The Climate Commitment Act is one of the most ambitious climate programs in the nation. Yesterday, in defending the CCA, Washingtonians showed the country that the Evergreen State is committed to being a leader in climate action, and will continue to invest in a cleaner, greener future.
