Seattle, WA – Today, the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure held a hearing on protecting the Columbia River. A bill in the House would address the current threats to this waterway and would provide funding for restoration.

The Columbia River Restoration Act of 2010 (H.R. 4652), introduced by Rep. Blumenauer (OR), will provide $40 million each year for the next five years to address the extreme levels of toxic pollution in the water and create programs to ensure an ongoing commitment to restoring the Columbia River.

“The Columbia River is a treasure of the Northwest. Unfortunately, the Columbia River Basin continues to be polluted and degraded by toxic pollution,” said Environment Washington’s Environmental Advocate, Heather Shute. “We need to pass the Columbia River Restoration Act to improve water quality, protect fish and wildlife, and provide much needed energy and resources to restoring the health of the Columbia River Basin.”
