Each year, pollution from cars, trucks and other vehicles cuts short an estimated 58,000 lives, and increases the risk of lung cancer, stroke and heart disease. And even though cars are much safer than they used to be, motor vehicle crashes each year still kill an estimated 40,000 Americans and seriously injure 4.5 million. To make our neighborhoods safer, we need to make it easier to get around without a car.

People-friendly streets are safe and comfortable for everyone, whether you walk, roll, bike, ride transit, or drive. I strongly urge you to invest in safe sidewalks, bikeways, and other safety improvements in our city.
