Washington sets the nation’s strongest Clean Cars standard

Washington state is setting nation-leading Clean Car standards and delivering concrete ways to get more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road.

In April 2021, the state Legislature passed new standards that will require all new light-duty vehicles sold in the state to be electric by 2030 — the most ambitious goal of its kind. The standards also establish a mapping and planning tool for EV adoption that lets consumers know where they can charge EVs and requires that utilities and building codes prepare for increased electricity demand. 

“Accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and their related infrastructure will take much more work,” said Pam Clough, Environment Washington state director. “But aligning our state’s target with what we know we need to do to avoid the worst effects of climate change is a key step in the right direction.” 

Increased EV use will help lower Washington’s transportation emissions, the state’s leading source of climate pollution.
