While the COVID-19 pandemic cast a tragic shadow across the United States in 2020, environmental advocates at the national, state and municipal levels were still able to effect change this past year. Highlights included helping to enhance our country’s commitment to conserving land and wildlife, advancing renewable energy usage, decreasing plastic waste and creating cleaner transportation and water.

Environment America unveils new initiatives during Climate Week

One of the largest climate summits of the year, Climate Week NYC, kicks off this week, as fires continue to burn across the American West, hurricanes brew in the Atlantic and heat records are broken across the country. Environment America and its state affiliates are using this event and the urgency brought on by the extreme weather to both amplify education and call for specific actions in support of climate solutions.

New analysis: Arizonans are going outdoors in large numbers, indicating need to pass federal Great American Outdoors Act

A new fact sheet released by Environment Arizona Research & Policy Center shows Arizonans have been flocking to the outdoors in significant numbers in recent months. According to the group, between April and May 2020, visitation at Arizona’s state parks increased by 45 percent, compared to a 15 percent decrease during the same period last year.

Sen. Manchin, lead sponsor of the bill in the Senate, spoke to the broad bipartisan support for the bill, and commented on how a desire to protect our nation’s public lands for future generations unites us all as well. “Passing the Great American Outdoors Act is an investment in our nation and our future generations, and will ensure our children and grandchildren can enjoy the wild and wonderful outdoor spaces of America for decades to come,” he said.
