On Monday, March 6, students from across the University of California system headed to Sacramento to lobby Gov. Gavin Newsom, agency officials and members of the Legislature to expand California’s network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a part of the plan to conserve 30% of California’s coastal waters by 2030 following the Decadal Management Review. Conservation Associate Ben Grundy joined the youth voices from CALPIRG Students for a rally on the Capitol lawn.

Over the past few months, UC students have educated tens of thousands of their peers on campuses across the state and gathered thousands of signatures and public comments in support of expanding MPAs. Now, as part of an annual lobby day, these students delivered these shows of support to state leaders. The team of ocean advocates met with more than 50 legislative offices to build support for California’s continued ambition when it comes to protecting our ocean.

For decades, California has led the way on science-based marine conservation efforts. This leadership influences not only national efforts to protect our oceans but international marine conservation efforts. Just this past weekend, the United Nations reached an agreement on the High Seas Treaty which is a crucial step for protecting marine life outside of national jurisdictions.

As climate change and extractive human activities affect ocean conditions, California must continue to defend against biodiversity loss. The world is ready for meaningful ocean protections, and all eyes will be on California as the state creates pathways to reach its goal of protecting 30% of our coastal waters by 2030.
