
Small solar projects are delivering 10 times as much power as a decade ago
New report documents the rapid rise of rooftop solar with detailed state-by-state data and rankings for small-scale solar trends

Small-scale solar energy – most of which is installed on rooftops – is growing rapidly in the U.S., producing 10 times as much power in 2022 as a decade earlier. That’s according to a new report released today by Environment America Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group.
In 2022, small-scale solar produced enough electricity to power 5.7 million typical American homes – more than all the homes in the state of Pennsylvania.
“Today, in America you can get your energy straight from your roof,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of Environment America Research & Policy Center’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy and one of the authors of the report. ““It’s become increasingly absurd to pay for power from a distant plant spewing pollution when we can just soak up the sun on our rooftops.”
