Great lakes beaches are polluted by plastic waste. A recent citizen science report from the Alliance for the Great Lakes found that 86% of litter collected by their Adopt-A-Beach volunteers was partly or entirely composed of plastic. Plastic waste persists in our environment for hundreds of years where it pollutes our water and soil and harms wildlife.

Environment Illinois is working to help stop the flood of plastic before it ends up on our beaches by supporting policies to phase out some of the worst kinds of single-use plastic items, like plastic foam cups and take-out containers. But for the plastic that is already out there we need to keep it out of our waters. Join our beach cleanup to help keep pollution out of Lake Michigan.
