Momentum grows for clean lighting

Lawmakers in a growing number of states are passing clean lighting legislation. Last year, California and Vermont enacted policy to phase out the sale of fluorescents by 2025. So far this year, Colorado has enacted the policy and lawmakers in Hawaii, Rhode Island, Maine and Oregon have passed the legislation and sent it to their governors to sign. Meanwhile Massachusetts lawmakers will hold a hearing on a clean lighting bill in July.

LED light bulbs are readily available replacements for fluorescent bulbs in all needed shapes and sizes and are much more energy-efficient than fluorescent bulbs.

“A growing number of states are acting to reduce energy waste from lighting,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America. “The Biden Administration should take their lead from these states and support a global transition away from inefficient toxic lightbulbs.”
