Renewables cheaper than coal

New study finds that almost every coal-fired power plant in the country could be cost-effectively replaced by local solar or wind and batteries.

Clean energy

According to new analysis conducted by Energy Innovation, once you factor in the clean energy tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act, the energy supplied by 99% of U.S. coal plants would be cheaper if those plants were shut down and replaced with wind farms or solar fields.

“The sheer abundance of America’s clean energy resources coupled with declining costs of harnessing that energy should give policy makers the confidence to set their sights on a future powered entirely by renewables,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director, Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy, Environment America Research & Policy Center.
