Trenton – Governor Phil Murphy on Wednesday directed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) to launch New Jersey’s fourth offshore wind solicitation in early 2024. Gov. Murphy’s action reaffirmed New Jersey’s commitment to generating a 100% of its power from clean energy sources by 2035 and underscores the strength and promise of New Jersey’s clean energy sector.

In response, Environment New Jersey State Director Doug O’Malley issued the following statement:

“For New Jersey’s clean energy goals, the answer is still blowing in the wind. Offshore wind represents the best pathway to reach a 100% clean and renewable energy future for the Garden State and will be our largest source of in-state clean renewable energy. Regardless of the actions of one wind developer a month ago, the winds off the Jersey Shore are as strong as ever and a goldmine of clean energy.”

“Gov. Murphy’s announcement to move forward with the fourth NJBPU offshore solicitation is a vote of confidence that New Jersey can still be a national leader in offshore wind. The NJBPU’s solicitation schedule with clear benchmarks has resulted in incredibly high interest and bids. We expect this fourth solicitation will have robust interest from a broad swath of offshore wind developers.”

“On the heels of the just-starting COP 28 climate summit, it will be critical for both states and federal government to lead the way on climate action. We thank the Murphy Administration for moving forward on offshore wind to reach the goal of 11 megawatts of wind power generation by 2040. We need to reduce climate warming pollutants from fossil fuel power plants and offshore wind remains our best solution.”
