
Proposal could protect 245,000 acres in Lunas County, NM
A new national monument near Las Cruces would protect critical wildlife habitat and unique recreation areas.

A coalition of local elected leaders, business owners, youth leaders and environmental organizations have proposed designatin approximately 245,000 acres in the Mimbres Peaks – the Florida Mountains, Cookes Range, Good Sight Mountains, and Tres Hermanas – as a new national monument.
This area is home to diverse wildlife including mountain lions, black bears, foxes, pronghorn, mule deer, elk, badgers and birds including eagles and other raptors.
Locals and visitors enjoy hunting, hiking, horseback riding, biking, camping and nature photography in the area.
