Environment North Carolina Advocate Emily Mason and colleagues from over a dozen other states went to DC this past week to lobby Congress to pass pragmatic environmental legislation.

The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act and Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act are common sense bills that would help to protect wildlife from the mountains to the coastline of North Carolina. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act is a bipartisan bill led by Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) and cosponsored by Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) as well as other Republicans, Democrats, and Independents within the Senate. If passed, this bill would help to save iconic wildlife native to North Carolina such as the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel, the Gopher Frog and more

Plastic Pellets, or “nurdles”, have been found up and down North Carolina’s coastline by volunteers making up the Nurdle Patrol. Nurdles end up in the digestive tracts of ocean wildlife and can starve marine wildlife important to our oceans. Plastic pellets can also absorb toxic chemicals including DDT, PCBs, and mercury which end up in marine wildlife and pose problems up the foodchain. Making sure that manufacturers are held accountable for spilling nurdles in our waters would make a big difference for our wildlife.

You can join in on these efforts to advocate for common sense legislation that helps North Carolina be the beautiful state that it is by signing our petitions for Congress to pass the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act and the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act.
