Writers and nature-lovers of all ages, our May Writing Contest is now open for submissions! Whether you’re a poet, essayist, or aspiring wordsmith, we want to hear your stories about nature. A panel of judges - including New York Times bestselling author of the Lemoncello series Chris Grabenstein - will review all submissions and pick four winners who will have their submission featured on our website and share a one-on-one virtual lunch or activity with one of our experts.

How to Enter

Please respond to one (and only one) of the following prompts:

Under 18

Poetry: What’s your favorite animal? Write a poem from its perspective.

Essay: Tell us a story about why protecting the planet is important to you.

18+

Poetry: Write a poem about your most treasured place outside.

Essay: How does nature inspire you?

All entries may be submitted beginning May 1, 2020, and must be submitted by 11:59 ET on Thursday, May 21, 2020 via our online submission platform, by submitting your name, email (or email of a parent/guardian if under 18), and entry.

Winners will be contacted on Monday, June 1, 2020.

Prize

Winners will have their pieces featured on the Environment America website. Winners will also have the opportunity to have a virtual “lunch” with one of our nature experts, to have a one-on-one discussion or complete a fun nature activity. 

Official Rules

Eligibility: NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN THIS CONTEST. Membership or donation is not required for entry. Employees and immediate family and household members of employees are not eligible to enter.

Selection of winners and odds of winning: No winner will be selected until Monday, June 1, 2020. Two winners will be selected from the over 18 age group, and two winners will be selected from the under 18 age group. Criteria for selection of winners: Originality 30%, keeping with the theme 30%, content 40%. Winners will be chosen based on one round of judging. All entries will be equally considered within their age group. Odds of winning depends on the total number of qualified entries received.

List of winners: Winners will be listed on the Environment America website (environmentamerica.org) and on Environment America’s Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages.

Ties: In the event of a tie, both of the top entries will be awarded the prize.

By entering this contest, you agree with the official rules and acknowledgement that the decisions of the judges are final. 

By submitting your work, you are giving Environment America permission to post your writing on our website and social media.

Consumer Disclosure: The top two entries from each age group will be featured on the Environment America website. Winners will also have the opportunity to have a virtual “lunch” with one of our nature experts. Approximate retail value of the prize is $0.
