Interior Dept to lease Gulf of Mexico for offshore wind
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced today plans to deploy 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy by 2030, including in the Gulf of Mexico. A newly released leasing schedule projects that the Interior Department will decide on an area of the Gulf to lease by early 2022, with a lease sale by the end of that year.
New report shows Texas has huge offshore wind potential
AUSTIN - Offshore wind could provide Texas with 166% of its electricity needs, according to a new report released today by Environment Texas Research & Policy Center. Last year, the federal government identified Port Isabel and Port Arthur as viable sites for offshore wind and selected the two Texas towns for more detailed cost analysis. Environment Texas called on the state of Texas to form a task force to begin siting offshore wind.

Environment Texas Research & Policy Center, TexPIRG Education Fund and more than 130 additional groups from coast-to-coast sent Austin-based Whole Foods CEO John Mackey a letter Thursday calling on him to commit to a concrete and verifiable plan to reduce the company’s plastic footprint. This letter comes on the heels of a Greenpeace report released last week that found that the chain was failing on its policies and practices aimed at eliminating plastic waste.
