Methane Emissions Reduction Program to invest $1.55 billion to cut oil and gas pollution

Last month, Environment Texas, in collaboration with 36 other environmental organizations from across the country, urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prioritize and implement robust measures under the Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP).

One important provision of the historic climate legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act, was the establishment of a groundbreaking program aimed at cutting methane pollution from the oil and gas industry. MERP marks a significant milestone in the fight against climate change. For the first time, oil and gas companies will be held accountable for their methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. This program will impose a fee on these companies, with the collected funds earmarked for programs to cut methane pollution.
