When you buy a bottle of water or get an iced coffee to go in a plastic cup with a plastic lid and a plastic straw, you will drink it and then throw away the container. Once it is thrown away- it does not just disappear. Instead, it ends up in a landfill or worse: in our parks and waterways where it harms our wildlife and ecosystems. It then takes hundreds of years for it to break down- if it does at all. Something that we use for such a short amount of time goes on to cause harm and take up space for hundreds of years. Plastic pollution is becoming a massive problem- and it is time to put an end to it.

Plastic Free July

Next month say no to single use plastics and participate in Plastic Free July. Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps people reduce their plastic waste and form eco-friendly habits. Virginia is known for our waterways, the Chesapeake Bay, and our breath-taking coast. It is well known that marine animals like turtles and whales are negatively impacted by the plastic pollution that is found in these waters. We need to reduce plastic waste, and Plastic Free July is a great opportunity.

Get started today

We still have a few days left in June but that is no reason not to do a little homework. Start by looking around and seeing how much single use plastic you are using. Whether it is plastic water bottles, straws, or grocery bags- there are reusable alternatives. A bar of soap is a great alternative to a plastic soap dispenser. You can bring your own reusable silverware, water bottle, or straw so there is no need to purchase plastic. Store leftovers in reusable containers instead of covering them in plastic wrap. We can make a difference by reducing our plastic waste- join the movement and say no to single use plastics!

From a plastic free fourth of July to zero waste grocery shopping, we’ll be sharing our tips and tricks to go plastic free all month long!
