The Uinta basin, home to a diverse set of creatures from endangered black-footed ferrets to plants that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, sits atop pockets of crude oil and natural gas.
To transport these fossil fuels to the Gulf Coast, local governments and oil companies are planning to invest up to $4.5 billion to construct a new railway through it.
