PHOENIX — Arizona Public Service (APS), the state’s largest utility, committed today to a goal of 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2050. The plan also includes an interim goal of getting 45 percent of the utility’s power from renewable sources like solar and wind by 2030. That makes APS the first major U.S. utility to set a target of tripling its renewable energy generation by the end of the decade.

Emma Searson, 100 Percent Renewable campaign director with Environment America Research & Policy Center, issued the following statement:

“It’s becoming clearer each day that renewable energy is the go-to option for states, cities, businesses, households — and even utilities. APS’s announcement is the latest in a string of major commitments from across the country to embrace a future powered by clean energy, and is the kind of action that will put Arizona on track for rapid renewable energy adoption.

“While we applaud APS for taking this critical first step, we urge them to prioritize truly clean sources of energy, namely solar and wind, to reach their 100 percent goal. Arizona can and should tap into the nearly limitless renewable energy from the sun shining down on the state, leading the way toward a cleaner, healthier future. We look forward to working with APS and the Arizona Corporation Commission to codify a renewable energy vision for the state and ensure it becomes a reality. And, we’re calling on other public utilities, cities, states and businesses to join in the renewable energy revolution.”
