BALTIMORE — By winning Tuesday’s Maryland Democratic primary election, State Del. Brooke Lierman took a giant step toward becoming Maryland’s state comptroller. While election officials are still counting mail-in votes, Lierman’s opponent has conceded that he cannot catch up and multiple news outlets have declared her the winner.

Environment America’s state office, Environment Maryland, endorsed Lierman back on Earth Day, given Del. Lierman’s history as a champion of environmental issues. If she wins the general election in November and becomes Maryland’s comptroller — the state’s chief accountant and a key voice on the state’s Board of Public Works — she’ll play a critical role on environmental policy.

In recent years, Maryland has made monumental strides on the environment, from enacting one of the nation’s strongest laws to reduce climate pollution to establishing the nation’s first foam food packaging ban. But Maryland needs to do more to stall the climate change that increasingly impacts our daily lives through severe weather such as the current heat wave

In response, Wendy Wendlandt, the president of Environment America released the following statement:

“All Marylanders, regardless of their political affiliation, can take comfort that Brooke Lierman will make a strong comptroller. Lierman has a robust record on a wide array of environmental issues, including transportation, energy and waste reduction in the state Legislature. We are excited by the vision she brings to the office of Comptroller.

“Environment Maryland, our state office, is eager to work with Delegate Lierman to ensure that the state expands and expedites investments in climate-resilient infrastructure, clean, efficient energy production and public transportation. We urge all Marylanders to vote for Lierman in November 2022.”
