Setting the Pace: NJBPU Announces 2,658 Megawatts of New Offshore Wind Power off Jersey Shore to Orsted, Atlantic Shores

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities voted this morning unanimously to greenlight 2,658 megawatts of offshore wind through successful winning solicitation bids through Orsted and Atlantic Shores for construction of offshore wind turbines off the Jersey Shore, stretching from Ocean to Cape May Counties. The award is the largest in the nation’s history and put New Jersey on track to reach the goal set out through Gov. Murphy for 7,500 MW by 2035.

NJ Transit Commits To Meeting Electric Bus Mandate

During a NJ Transit Energy & Sustainability Committee meeting, NJ Transit staff and President Kevin Corbett committed to meeting the mandate for the electrification for NJ Transit buses through S2252/A4819, signed into law by Governor Murphy in January 2020. As outlined in the legislation, 10% of bus procurement will be in 2024, 50% of new bus procurement in 2026 and 100% in 2032.

Report: Pricing carbon key to taking on climate change

BOSTON -- Last month, President Joe Biden released a massive infrastructure spending plan designed to build a cleaner and healthier America. This week, on Earth Day, the president is hosting world leaders for a global climate summit, and is discussing ways in which the U.S. will meet its goals under the Paris climate accords. According to a new report, putting a price on carbon can be key to the success of both. In Carbon Pricing 101: Strategies for putting a price on global warming pollution, U.S. PIRG Education Fund, Environment America Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group recommend that the federal government and U.S. states pursue carbon pricing programs, along with other policies, to cut pollution, as the best way to achieve the emissions reductions necessary to stave off the worst of global warming.

NJDEP Proposes Advanced Clean Truck Rule To Electrify Diesel Trucks & Dump Dirty Diesel

The NJ Department of Environmental Protection proposed the Advanced Clean Truck rule, one of the many regulations stemming from the NJ Protecting Against Climate Threats intiative. This rule will be an electric truck mandate first adopted by California last year and will apply to all vehicle classes of trucks, including everything from delivery vans to tractor trailers. It is a zero-emissions sales requirement, placed on the manufacturer, that starts in model year 2025 and slowly increases each year through model year 2035.

BOEM Kick-Off Meeting on Ocean Wind is Next Step To Make Wind Energy Real Off the Jersey Shore

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) hosted a virtual public scoping meeting in regards to the Ocean Wind Energy Facility off the Jersey Shore. The meetings are designed to help BOEM determine the important factors to be considered in the Environmental Impact Statement that must be conducted before any offshore wind project can move forward with construction. The Ocean Wind Energy Facility is planned 15 miles southeast of Atlantic City and should produce 1100 MW of electricity, which is enough to power approximately 500,000 homes. This is the first offshore wind project in New Jersey, which is being developed by Orsted.

New report: By electrifying all its buildings, New Jersey could reap tremendous health and climate benefits

New Jersey ranks ninth for highest potential greenhouse gas emissions reduction from electrifying buildings in the next 30 years, according to a new report released today by Environment New Jersey, NJPIRG, and Frontier Group. The study, Electric Buildings: Repowering Homes and Businesses for Our Health and Environment, found that completely repowering New Jersey’s homes and businesses with electricity by 2050 would result in emissions reductions of 9.5 million metric tons of CO2, the equivalent of taking more than 2 million cars off the road.
