The Bus Line Business Coalition for Electric Buses is 100 strong
This summer, Environment Oregon has been talking to people across the greater Portland area about our “Charge Ahead, TriMet” campaign, calling on TriMet to accelerate the integration of electric buses into our transit fleets as a key strategy to achieve reductions in pollution from the transportation sector to protect public health and tackle climate change. We are excited to report that our "Bus Line Business Coalition for Electric Buses" just hit 100 businesses.
This summer, Environment Oregon has been talking to people across the greater Portland area about our “Charge Ahead, TriMet” campaign, calling on TriMet to be courageous and wise, and to accelerate the integration of electric buses into our transit fleets as a key strategy to achieve reductions in pollution from the transportation sector to protect public health and tackle climate change. Specifically, we are asking TriMet to stop purchasing diesel buses by 2020 and transition to an all-electric fleet. We are deeply concerned that TriMet is continuing to purchase diesel buses every year, locking in our continued dependence on polluting fuels for at least 16 additional years.
We have pulled together a “Bus Line Business Coalition for Electric Buses,” which we are excited to report just became 100 businesses strong. Bus line business owners are important stakeholders, and based on the conversations we’ve had, there is a lot of support for electric buses, particularly because they are zero emission and much quieter than a traditional diesel bus.
Below is a letter to TriMet leadership from the Bus Line Business Coalition:
Dear General Manager Kelsey and TriMet leadership,
We, the undersigned bus-line businesses, are 100% supportive of TriMet transitioning to a 100% electric bus fleet. Making the transition away from diesel to zero emission, fully electric buses is good for public health and it’s good for our planet.
By making that commitment, you would eliminate 39,990 tons of carbon dioxide pollution every year—the equivalent of taking 7,720 cars off the road.
Electrifying our bus fleet is a key step in moving toward a transportation system powered by 100% renewable energy, which will be necessary to stop the worst impacts of climate change.
Please stop purchasing diesel buses by 2020 and transition to a fully-electric bus fleet. Now is the time to take our bus system into the 21st century.
Sincerely,
Half-pint Leather
