The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is home to the only barrier reef in the continental U.S.
The Florida Keys is a national treasure that deserves greater protection.
That was the overwhelming takeaway from the first (and only virtual) public meeting held on Tuesday by the Natitonal Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA is soliciting input on its proposal to update management measures in the National Marine Sanctuary.
Calling in from across Florida and around the country, students, faith leaders and advocates spoke out about the need to protect the Keys’ sea turtles, manatees, seabirds and reef fish. Of the 26 participants, 21 spoke in favor of strong protections for habitats and wildlife. This support for conservation is a clear sign that NOAA has public support for action to save the Keys.
