Environment Maine, Environment America endorse re-election of Gov. Janet Mills, Rep. Chellie Pingree

PORTLAND, Maine – Environment Maine and its national office Environment America announced Friday that they are endorsing the re-election of Maine Gov. Janet Mills and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree in Maine’s 1st Congressional District.

Gov. Mills is a longtime green champion on climate, clean energy and plastic pollution issues. Environment Maine worked with her on a law that established the Maine Climate Council and set greenhouse gas reduction targets, putting Maine on track to hit a goal of using 80% renewable sources for electricity by 2030 and 100% by 2050. In addition, under Mills’ leadership, Maine became the first state to pass a law holding product producers responsible for the plastics and packaging materials they use. Mills also withdrew Maine from a national offshore drilling coalition, joined the United States Climate Alliance and removed a moratorium on clean wind power development.

Rep. Pingree, as Chair of the House Appropriations Committee’s Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, secured one of the largest budgets ever for environmental agencies and programs. She’s cosponsored a wide variety of key legislation, including the Clean School Bus Act, Break Free from Plastics Pollution Act, PFAS Action Act, and Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.

“Maine’s motto, ‘Dirgio,’ loosely means ‘I lead’ in Latin. That couldn’t be more appropriate,”said Lisa Frank, the executive director of Environment America’s Washington Legislative Office. “Between Governor Mills’ accomplishments in Augusta and Congress member Pingree’s leadership on Capitol Hill, Maine’s elected officials have set lofty standards for environmental action that should make every Mainer proud — and make our country as a whole more sustainable. Just think of what they could do with another term each.”
